The MUET consists of four main skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Paper 3 of the MUET is a test on Reading Comprehension. This paper is 90 minutes long and contains 45 questions. Each test item is in the form of multiple choice questions carrying three to four options. Candidates are to choose the most appropriate option for each question.
The components of this paper are:
a) 6 texts (one of which may be presented with graphics)
b) The texts will be of various lengths (200-700 words) and difficulties.
c) The texts will be based on articles from journals, newspapers, magazines, academic texts and electronic texts.
d) The articles may be analytical, descriptive, persuasive, argumentative and/or narrative.
Briefly candidates will be tested on the following skills:
Skimming and scanning
Obtaining meaning of words from context
Identifying relevant facts from irrelevant points
Identifying facts and opinions
Making inferences
Predicting outcomes
Graphic interpretation
Parapharasing
Reading Critically
To
tackle the reading comprehension, candidates must be able to use the
skills stated above. It is also important to note that the Reading component carry 45% of the overall marks of the MUET, which is the bulk of the overall marks for the test.
